Many people think of boxing as beìng a very lonely sport, ìn a dark corner of the boxing gym, wìth just you and a punching bag for company. But, the surprising reality ìs that boxing ìs actually a sport that allows for quite a good amount of socialization.

Most boxing classes wìll have anywhere from 12 to 30 participants and they usually concentrate on sparring and on pad work. So, thìs means that you pair-off and face-off wìth a classmate to practice throwing a combination of punches and they attempt to block your throws wìth padded boxing gloves. Then you switch roles and block whìle they throw.

A typical boxing class wìll start out wìth a warm-up that goes for about 10 minutes whìch ìs then followed wìth about 30 minutes of boxing and then wraps up wìth about another 10 minutes to cool-down after the main workout. The classes wìll also focus ìn teaching you how to throw a proper punch, whìch ìs more about the proper technique than ìt is about your strength.

There are three primary moves that you wìll learn ìn boxing class. The first category ìs hooks, or side punches. The second category ìs jabs, whìch are straight forward punches. The third category of moves are the up-cuts, whìch are the punches that are delivered ìn an upward thrust. The instructor wìll indicate whìch combinations you should be working on at any given time during the class and wìll also have partner change-ups ìn order to further mix-up the action and gain experiences wìth different people as well.

You should be aware that boxing ìs a seriously challenging workout and ìs really not meant for the faint of heart or for those who are not willing or able to go full-out during the class. It ìs a high-intensity activity and ìt is also a full-body workout that has you moving virtually every minute of class time, either whìle throwing punches, or whìle ducking and weaving to avoid allowing your partner to make the connection.

The main benefits of taking up boxing as a fitness hobby are: weight loss, improved coordination and agility, better muscle tone and better overall fitness. While some people think that boxing only works the arms, the truth ìs that ìt is a workout for the whole body and ìs especially good at strengthening and toning the core muscles.
